Story Tile |
Introduction:Have you heard that every picture tells a story? Remember when you would read picture books and the pictures in the books went along with the story. For this assignment you are going to read different myths or fables and then develop a tile that shows the main event of the story.
Task: Your first task is to find or write a fable or myth that you feel would make a good story tile. Then you will make the tile by first pouring the plaster and then carving the picture. After the tiles are dry you will paint the tiles.
Process: 1. Research different myths and fables to find a story to illustrate. www.wendy.com/children/index.html http://www.umass.edu/aesop/open.html http://allaboutfrogs.org/stories/fables.html
2. Print out a copy of your myth or fable.
3. Decide the main event of the fable or myth that you will illustrate. Answer the following questions about the event: Who or what are the characters? What is happening? When is it taking place? Where does it take place?
4. Draw 3 different thumbnail sketches of the event. Pick one to represent.
5. The next step to use a pencil lightly draw the image on your plaster tile. Begin with a border that will make your edges higher then the rest of the picture.
6. Begin carving your plaster by carving away the background and leaving the picture. Leave the main design higher then the background.
7. After the main background is carved then carve some items deeper then others.
8. Carve in textures to create movement in your tile.
9. Let the tile dry for at least one week.
10. Paint your tile.
Evaluation:
You will be evaluated on the completion of the tile. The tile will be evaluated using the art rubric.
Conclusion:
Now that you have finished your tile it is time to reflect. Answer the following questions: What did you like about the project? What was the hardest part of this project? What would you do differently if you were to do this project again? |
